Downtown Anchorage

I've been looking forward to the farmers market all winter. I heard there was delicous food, local musicians, and lots of booths for shopping. First of all, it's not a farmers market. It's a swap meet or a craft fair. I made the ultimate mistake of not going while hungry. Of the three rows one was dedicated exclusively to food. Everything smelled amazing but I just wasn't ready to eat. I figured I'd work up an appetite while browsing the stalls, no such luck. Every five stalls was a repeat. A few booths peaked our interest, but none received our business.

Instead of walking straight back to our car, we took a stroll around downtown.

Exploring the Base

We were feeling antsy just sitting around the house so we met up with Mike and Ashley to do some hiking/exploring around the backside of base.

First we swung by the spot we got married on Six Mile Lake.

After we got tired of the playground, we headed up the road to a trail that took us by Otter Lake. Unfortunately the gnats and mosquitoes were out in full force. We saw evidence of moose all along the trail, but we didn't run into any.

Football & Babysitting

Mike plays football on base every Sunday. Every Saturday night Will gets a text or a call asking him to come play. This weekend he finally said yes. Seester and Jake needed a break from Hoot and I wanted a puppy to play with so we took him with us to base to watch the guys play.

He was a really good sideline dog. Between attacking grass clumps and eating flowers he quietly watched the guys play. On the way home, I thought he'd enjoy sticking his head out the window and feeling the wind...nope. He wouldn't go near the windows until we rolled them up. He must have really tired himself out. He sniffed out a fry from under the seat, ate it, then passed out under there.

Will had fun playing football. Hoot and I had fun wandering around the park in the sunshine. It was a nice relaxing Sunday.

Earthquake Park

As much as I love to be a couch potato, I just couldn't do it tonight. It was a pretty day/night and I wanted to get out and enjoy it. Ashley and Mike came over and we were all sitting around so I suggested we check out Earthquake Park. Everyone was game so we drove over to have an outdoor adventure.

The park has been left in its natural state ever since a 9.2 earthquake hit on March 27, 1964. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America. The land slid into the Cook Inlet, taking with it 75 homes. We started off at a lookout point near the airport and made our way towards town on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.

We basically wandered on the path, then off the path, then back on the path. There were a bunch of mountain bike trails and we ended up following a couple of those.

At one point we saw a blue tarp on a nearby hill/mound. The guys were convinced a dead body was under there and ran off to check it out. Don't ask me why they thought they'd find a dead body. When they got to the tarp we could hear them arguing over who should lift the corner up. I guess they didn't think about what they'd do once they got there. Eventually they peaked. No body.

It was surreal to be running around the park and see all the downed trees around us. I saw a couple of downed telephone polls too. It's so sad to think of what it must have looked like back when it happened.

Couples Lunch

The mister and I met up with Seester and Jake for an REI adventure. She used my member coupon to get camping gear, I used her purchase to add to my dividend. Win-Win! Mike and Ashley were out and about and randomly popped in to see what we were up to.

Nothing pumps me up and gets me thinking about trying to be more outdoorsy like seeing all the cool gear. I also have flashbacks of the Kili trek and camping in the Serengeti. Every other phrase out of my mouth was "This would have been helpful in Tanzania." I miss my Duma, Twiga and Dik Dik!

After shopping we headed across the street to Bear Tooth and got delicious pizza.

Baby Steps Toward Italy

Step 1: We got orders on May 13!
Step 2: We got our itinerary the other day we leave Alaska on August 20
Step 3: The dates for the movers have been set for next month.
Step 4: I got both my government and regular passports

It's happening! It's really happening! The mister is doing an amazing job of staying on top of all the paperwork. He's been so busy this week meeting with different people to get things rolling and making sure all our papers are in order. I'm so grateful to have him taking charge of everything. It's so overwhelming, but we're slowly getting everything checked off.

Cookies & Hoot Puppy

Will and I went over to Seester's house to bake cookies and play with Hoot. I tried to take him out for a walk, but he really wasn't in the mood. He spent the whole time standing around until I started walking back toward the apartment. That's the only time he ran. So lame. Of course once we were inside again he was a little ball of pent up energy.

Will's Birthday v.22

A group of us went to Benihana for Will's birthday. The guys were watching our chef like hawks. They kept a running commentary of all the tricks. It's like a circus for grown ups with food. Such a fun dinner!
