Oregon Road Trip: Shaniko

Shaniko Oregon

When Mama first announced that our first stop would be the ghost town, Shaniko, I was skeptical. I was imagining a super creepy abandoned town that had a few ghosts. On the other hand, I also pictured one of those tourist trap towns that have the reenactments with the shootouts at high noon in the middle of the main street.

I definitely was not expecting the cute little town that we found. It's not quite tourist season so only a few of the shops/buildings-turned-museums were actually open. We just wandered through town and poked our heads into the few buildings that were open. I had a blast running around with the camera.

It was a fun pit stop and we enjoyed a picnic lunch there...in the car. It was too windy and cold to sit outside on one of the many picnic benches. Would I visit again? Heck yeah, if I'm in the area I'd love to see the town when everything is open. But it was fun this time having free reign to explore without anyone around except a few other photographers and road trippers.

Oregon Road Trip: On the Road

Marco Polo Airport

We're back in Oregon! It was a long annoying journey from Italy to Portland, but we made it in one piece. Will turned 25 the day after we arrived and we celebrated by buying him some fancy new suits and a pair of Oakley's; watching Captain America 2; and going out to dinner with my extended family on my mom's side.

PDX carpet
I don't know if you know this, but #PDXcarpet is a thing. They're replacing the carpet at the Portland airport so everyone is posting their carpet pictures before the renovation. There's even an Instagram dedicated to it.

Then Will, Mama, and I hit the road! We drove out to Eastern Oregon and made stops along the way. The ghost town of Shaniko, John Day Fossil Beds (Clarno, Painted Hills, and Sheep Rock), and the Wallowas. Of course, we experienced some of the typical gray skies and rainy weather here and there. But for the most part, Oregon was showing off for us. Bright blue skies, big puffy clouds, and green scenery...absolutely gorgeous!

Our very first pit stop was early into our trip. I wanted to stop at the Bonneville Dam, but I wasn't paying attention and we missed the exit. Instead, we stopped at the Cascade Fish Hatchery, which is also the start of the Eagle Creek to Punchbowl Falls hike. We were hoping to get a quick peek at some baby fish or something, but there wasn't a lot going on. They're actually closed right now. Hence Will's grumpy face. If we have time before we leave, we might come back and do the hike. It's a little less than 4 miles in and back...totally doable day trip.

May Day

Our landlord invited us over to his house for a May Day party. Will was doing some mandatory fun at work so I went over by myself. Since our landlord picked me up, I was the first to arrive and I was put to work. First, I slaved over the bread. I mean, I really worked hard to make sure they came out well. (aka..I sliced them and put them in a bowl)

While I helped set out the appetizers we (my landlord, his wife, his father-in-law, and I) sipped on Prosecco mixed with ginger soda. I'm not a huge fan of ginger drinks, but this one isn't too bad. I switched to beer after a couple cups because I don't like to drink too many sweet(ish) drinks in a row.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but I fell while going down the stairs in our house last week. I'm not really sure what the heck happened, but my left thigh, ribs, and temple caught my fall. Anyway, I've been pretty gun shy about taking the stairs so I was nervous when I was asked to carry two platters of cheese and meat down from the kitchen. I was praying silently to myself with every stair that I wouldn't fall and drop everything. Luckily we all made it down safely!

At this point everyone else started showing up so I stopped taking pictures and stuffed my face. We had seafood risotto for a first course, pork shoulder with roasted potatoes as a main course, and strudel with gelato for dessert. Between all the food and beer, I caught a major case of the Itis. I drank a caffè (espresso) and it woke me right up. I'm starting to really love the stuff, I try not to drink it other than at their house so I don't get hooked.

Right after everyone left, Will showed up. He made the mistake of saying he was hungry so they stuffed him full of lots of food and lots of drinks. I practically had to roll him home.

How was your May Day? (Or Lei Day if you're in Hawaii) Can you believe it's May already? Crazy!
